I first bought a Buffy Sainte-Marie record when I was 12, and her music has always remained with me. In the 1960s, as a political activist, Buffy's lyrics were fearless, and I'm very grateful for all the risks that she took.Morrissey 1960s Sayings By Morrissey: I first bought a Buffy Sainte-Marie record when I was 12, and her music has
In 1960, fewer than 13 percent of Americans were obese, and diabetes had been diagnosed in 1 percent. Today, the percentage of obese Americans has almost tripled; the percentage of Americans with diabetes has increased sevenfold.Gary Taubes 1960s Sayings By Gary Taubes: In 1960, fewer than 13 percent of Americans were obese, and diabetes had been diagnosed
I believe history will come to view 9/11 as an event on par with November 22, 1963, the date on which John F. Kennedy was murdered, cutting short a presidency that was growing ever more promising. Dreams died that day in Dallas; it is easy to imagine the 1960s turning out rather differently had President Kennedy lived.Jon Meacham 1960s Sayings By Jon Meacham: I believe history will come to view 9/11 as an event on par with November
Have you ever read any Hannah Arendt?" I must look lost, because he explains further. "She's a political theorist."
" Anyway, she wrote this book about the trial of a Nazi lieutenant named Adolf Eichmann in the 1960s. Arendt was a Jew who left Germany during Hitler's reign, and during the trial this guy had to face up to all the atrocities he committed. Things only a monster could conceive of. However, he was examined by psychologists, and it was determined that he wasn't a psychopath, that in fact he was entirely normal. This left Arendt to determine that perfectly ordinary, everyday people were capable of crimes normally associated with only the most depraved, wicked members of society. She called it the banality of evil.
L. H. Cosway 1960s Sayings By L. H. Cosway: Have you ever read any Hannah Arendt?" I must look lost, because he explains further.
One of the best teaching experiences Ed Schein and I had when we were teaching at MIT in the 1960s was inventing a course on leadership through film.Warren Bennis 1960s Sayings By Warren Bennis: One of the best teaching experiences Ed Schein and I had when we were teaching
When Tony Benn became a minister in the 1960s
and I think this must be apocryphal
he had a huge map of Britain hung upside down in his office, so the channel was at the top and Scotland was at the bottom and, apparently, he said, "This is how we need to look at this country, with the money and the power draining by force of gravity out of the south east." That was a great idea. I rather liked him for that. I don't know if it's actually true or not.
Neal Ascherson 1960s Sayings By Neal Ascherson: When Tony Benn became a minister in the 1960s and I think this must be
You cannot step a foot into the literature about the 1960s without being told how 'creative', 'idealistic', and 'loving' it was, especially in comparison to the 1950s. I fact, the counterculture of the Sixties represented the triumph of what the art critic Harold Rosenberg famously called the 'herd of the independent minds'. Its so-called creativity consisted in continually recirculating a small number of radical cliches; its idealism was little more than irresponsible utopianism; and its crusading for 'love' was largely a blind for hedonistic self-indulgence.Roger Kimball 1960s Sayings By Roger Kimball: You cannot step a foot into the literature about the 1960s without being told how
Reckon your weakness as praise of God's power, endure suffering in joy, risk your life on the veracity of Christ, count your loneliness a means of grace.William Stringfellow 1960s Sayings By William Stringfellow: Reckon your weakness as praise of God's power, endure suffering in joy, risk your life
My decision to leave applied mathematics for economics was in part tied to the widely-held popular belief in the 1960s that macroeconomics had made fundamental inroads into controlling business cycles and stopping dysfunctional unemployment and inflation.Robert C. Merton 1960s Sayings By Robert C. Merton: My decision to leave applied mathematics for economics was in part tied to the widely-held
No one has a monopoly on knowledge the way that, say, IBM had in the 1960s in computing, or that Bell Labs had through the 1970s in communications. When useful knowledge exists in companies of all sizes and also in universities, non-profits and individual minds, it makes sense to orient your innovation efforts to accessing, building upon and integrating that external knowledge into useful products and services.Henry Chesbrough 1960s Sayings By Henry Chesbrough: No one has a monopoly on knowledge the way that, say, IBM had in the
After a major loss of dynamism in the 1960s, productivity growth rates began dropping in most countries, falling by half in the U.S. in the 1970s and more or less ceasing altogether in France, Germany and Britain in the late 1990s.Edmund Phelps 1960s Sayings By Edmund Phelps: After a major loss of dynamism in the 1960s, productivity growth rates began dropping in
My parents broke up when I was six. Before, I was a very active, naughty child, but after my father left me, I stopped talking. I became very good at hiding my emotions. I felt so ashamed of telling others that I didn't have a father, because that was not common in the 1960s.Tony Leung Chiu-Wai 1960s Sayings By Tony Leung Chiu-Wai: My parents broke up when I was six. Before, I was a very active, naughty
The real 1960s began on the afternoon of November 22, 1963. It came to seem that Kennedy's murder opened some malign trap door in American culture, and the wild bats flapped out.Lance Morrow 1960s Sayings By Lance Morrow: The real 1960s began on the afternoon of November 22, 1963. It came to seem
To pursue a so-called Third Way is foolish. We had our experience with this in the 1960s when we looked for a socialism with a human face. It did not work, and we must be explicit that we are not aiming for a more efficient version of a system that has failed.Vaclav Klaus 1960s Sayings By Vaclav Klaus: To pursue a so-called Third Way is foolish. We had our experience with this in
Since the 1960s, mainstream media has searched out and co-opted the most authentic things it could find in youth culture, whether that was psychedelic culture, anti-war culture, blue jeans culture. Eventually heavy metal culture, rap culture, electronica - they'll look for it and then market it back to kids at the mall.Douglas Rushkoff 1960s Sayings By Douglas Rushkoff: Since the 1960s, mainstream media has searched out and co-opted the most authentic things it
For the progressive left, social activism grounded in faith and theology crested in the 1960s.Mike McCurry 1960s Sayings By Mike McCurry: For the progressive left, social activism grounded in faith and theology crested in the 1960s.
I remember that mathematicians were telling me in the 1960s that they would recognize computer science as a mature discipline when it had 1,000 deep algorithms. I think we've probably reached 500.Donald Knuth 1960s Sayings By Donald Knuth: I remember that mathematicians were telling me in the 1960s that they would recognize computer
I was mixing iced tea and lemonade in my kitchen since as long as I can remember. It wasn't until some time in the early 1960s that it became associated with me publicly.Arnold Palmer 1960s Sayings By Arnold Palmer: I was mixing iced tea and lemonade in my kitchen since as long as I
When I arrived in America, I experienced serious culture shock. For someone with a religious upbringing, the 1960s were an extremely difficult time. Even though religion was a big part of the civil rights and peace movements, in my college religion was treated as irrelevant, hopelessly stodgy, and behind the times.Feisal Abdul Rauf 1960s Sayings By Feisal Abdul Rauf: When I arrived in America, I experienced serious culture shock. For someone with a religious
no smallpox vaccinations have been given worldwide since 1980, and in some countries like the USA, since the 1960s.Michael B.A. Oldstone 1960s Sayings By Michael B.A. Oldstone: no smallpox vaccinations have been given worldwide since 1980, and in some countries like the
45,000 sections of reinforced concrete - three tons each.
Nearly 300 watchtowers.
Over 250 dog runs.
Twenty bunkers.
Sixty five miles of anti-vehicle trenches - signal wire, barbed wire, beds of nails.
Over 11,000 armed guards.
A death strip of sand, well-raked to reveal footprints.
200 ordinary people shot dead following attempts to escape the communist regime.
96 miles of concrete wall.

Not your typical holiday destination.

JF Kennedy said the Berlin Wall was a better option than a war. In TDTL, the Anglo-German Bishop family from the pebbledashed English suburb of Oaking argue about this - among other - notions while driving to Cold War Berlin, through all the border checks, with a plan to visit both sides of it.
Joanna Campbell 1960s Sayings By Joanna Campbell: 45,000 sections of reinforced concrete - three tons each.Nearly 300 watchtowers.Over 250 dog runs.Twenty bunkers.Sixty
Nearly all the writing of our time is likely to disappear in a hundred years. Certainly most readers - and nearly all critics - feel that [Kurt] Vonnegut started to repeat himself, to grow increasingly self-indulgent and meandering, and to sometimes just blather in his later work. But his books up to "Slaughterhouse-Five" do possess a distinctiveness that will insure some kind of permanence, if only in the history of the 1960s and of science fiction.Michael Dirda 1960s Sayings By Michael Dirda: Nearly all the writing of our time is likely to disappear in a hundred years.
'Mad Men' is nothing more than the fulfillment of every possible stereotype of the early 1960s bundled up nicely to convince consumers that the sort of morally repugnant behavior exhibited by its characters - with one-night-stands and excessive consumption of Cutty Sark and Lucky Strikes - is glamorous and 'vintage.'George Lois 1960s Sayings By George Lois: 'Mad Men' is nothing more than the fulfillment of every possible stereotype of the early
At home, she toed the party line: "The greatest calling for a woman is to be a Catholic wife and mother." But I sensed that she hated the 1960s convention of stay-at-home motherhood. In my thirties, when my father shipped me my old Barbie-doll cases that had been sealed in storage since my mother's death, I found evidence of her unhappiness. My Barbie stuff was a mirror of her values. She never told me that marriage could be a trap, but she refused to buy my Barbie doll a wedding dress. She didn't say, "I loathe housework," but she refused to buy Barbie pots and pans. What she often said, however, was "Education is power." And in case I was too thick to grasp this, she bought graduation robes for Barbie, Ken, and Midge.M.G. Lord 1960s Sayings By M.G. Lord: At home, she toed the party line: "The greatest calling for a woman is to
I respect the astute and rigorously unsentimental David Horowitz as one of America's most original and courageous political analysts. He has the true 1960s spirit - audacious and irreverent, yet passionately engaged and committed to social change.Camille Paglia 1960s Sayings By Camille Paglia: I respect the astute and rigorously unsentimental David Horowitz as one of America's most original
No, there is no real Left now. If you are just counting heads, there are probably more people involved than in the 1960s, but they are atomized, committed to different special interests - gay rights, environmental rights, this, that. They don't coalesce into a movement that can really do things.Noam Chomsky 1960s Sayings By Noam Chomsky: No, there is no real Left now. If you are just counting heads, there are
We are particularly frustrated that so much of our politics today consists of lines first written during the clashes, domestic and foreign, of the 1960s. This "Groundhog Day" approach to replaying the culture war's tropes is perhaps nowhere in greater evidence than in how Americans talk about patriotism. Patriotism, as an idea, has been co-opted over the course of a generation by right-wingers who use the flag not as a symbol of transcendent national unity, but as a sectarian cudgel against the hippies, Francophiles, free-lovers and tree-huggers who constitute their caricature of the American left. The American left, for its part, has been so beaten down by this star-spangled caricature that it has largely ceded the very notion of patriotism to the right. As a result, the first reaction of far too many progressives to any talk of patriotism is automatic, allergic recoil. Needless to say, this reaction simply tightens the screws of the right's imprisoning caricature.Eric Liu 1960s Sayings By Eric Liu: We are particularly frustrated that so much of our politics today consists of lines first
I'm really fascinated with anything that takes place between the 1920s up through the 1960s. In some ways it feels familiar, and in other ways it feels like it's from another planet.Colin Hanks 1960s Sayings By Colin Hanks: I'm really fascinated with anything that takes place between the 1920s up through the 1960s.
I don't miss anything about the 1960s, not really. I did it. It's like asking, 'Do you miss the fourth grade?' I loved the fourth grade when I was in it, but I don't want to do it again.Grace Slick 1960s Sayings By Grace Slick: I don't miss anything about the 1960s, not really. I did it. It's like asking,
I think I definitely learned how to structure songs, just from listening to a lot of 1960s, 1970s pop music, although I'm sure my mother's watchful eye had a lot to do with it.Caitlin Rose 1960s Sayings By Caitlin Rose: I think I definitely learned how to structure songs, just from listening to a lot
By the 1960s, many of us believed that the Civil Rights Movement could eliminate racism in America during our lifetime. But despite significant progress, racism remains.Bill Cosby 1960s Sayings By Bill Cosby: By the 1960s, many of us believed that the Civil Rights Movement could eliminate racism
[T]he new weird represents a productive experiment in fantasy fiction. The New Wave of the 1960s and 1970s arguably embodied science fiction's claim to literary 'seriousness.' This desire for seriousness is not snobbery, as sometimes suggested by folks who overemphasize the entertainment function of speculative fiction; it's about recognition of the vast possibilities within the field.Darja Malcolm-Clarke 1960s Sayings By Darja Malcolm-Clarke: [T]he new weird represents a productive experiment in fantasy fiction. The New Wave of the
I am a big fan of music and clothing style of the 1960s. Whether in England or the United States, I like everything from that time.Robert Pattinson 1960s Sayings By Robert Pattinson: I am a big fan of music and clothing style of the 1960s. Whether in
Since it all appeared so scientific, and we wanted to hear it, Kinsey's pseudo-science became foundational for the sexual revolution, used both in courts and classrooms to push a limitless sexual revolution that began in the 1960s and through which we are still living. This revolution will not be over until it has overthrown all sexual boundaries, which means that it will not be complete until it extinguishes all opposition, the greatest of which is Christianity. Once again, we see atheism at the root of rebellion.Benjamin Wiker 1960s Sayings By Benjamin Wiker: Since it all appeared so scientific, and we wanted to hear it, Kinsey's pseudo-science became
It was in the early 1960s that my late revered teacher, Professor Abraham Joshua Heschel, became the first major Jewish theologian in America to enter into dialogue with Christian theologians on a high theological level.David Novak 1960s Sayings By David Novak: It was in the early 1960s that my late revered teacher, Professor Abraham Joshua Heschel,
If TV sitcoms idealized the American suburbs of the 1960s, the works of the artistic elite disparaged them ceaselessly, then and now. The songs of Pete Seeger, novels like Revolutionary Road, the stories of John Cheever, movies like Pleasantville and American Beauty, television series like Mad Men: in all of them, that long-ago land of lawns and houses is depicted as a country of stultifying conformity and cultural emptiness, sexual hypocrisy, alcoholism, and spiritual despair. Privilege murders the senses there, the creatives tell us. Gender roles strangle freedom. Family life turns the heart of adventure to ashes. There's bigotry and gossip and dangerous liaisons behind every closed door. Oh, the soul, the human soul! In the suburbs of fiction, she is forever dying. ButAndrew Klavan 1960s Sayings By Andrew Klavan: If TV sitcoms idealized the American suburbs of the 1960s, the works of the artistic
During the heat of the space race in the 1960s, the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration decided it needed a ballpoint pen to write in the zero gravity confines of its space capsules. After considerable research and development, the Astronaut Pen was developed at a cost of approximately $1 million US. The pen worked and also enjoyed some modest success as a novelty item back here on earth. The Soviet Union, faced with the same problem, used a pencil.Neil DeGrasse Tyson 1960s Sayings By Neil DeGrasse Tyson: During the heat of the space race in the 1960s, the US National Aeronautics and
In the 1930s, Americans hopped trains. In the 1950s, beat poets wrote about road trips. In the 1960s, we hitched rides. Today, however, it seems like the whole "coming of age" adventure has been abridged from a young person's life experience, leaving no gap, no bridge, no moment of real freedom in between school and career. IKen Ilgunas 1960s Sayings By Ken Ilgunas: In the 1930s, Americans hopped trains. In the 1950s, beat poets wrote about road trips.
The 1960s was a heroic age in the history of the art of communication - the audacious movers and shakers of those times bear no resemblance to the cast of characters in 'Mad Men.'George Lois 1960s Sayings By George Lois: The 1960s was a heroic age in the history of the art of communication -
I only know two to three people that I grew up with in advertising in the 1960s who are married to the same women.Jerry Della Femina 1960s Sayings By Jerry Della Femina: I only know two to three people that I grew up with in advertising in
In this book, you will encounter various interesting geometries that have been thought to hold the keys to the universe. Galileo Galilei (1564-1642) suggested that "Nature's great book is written in mathematical symbols." Johannes Kepler (1571-1630) modeled the solar system with Platonic solids such as the dodecahedron. In the 1960s, physicist Eugene Wigner (1902-1995) was impressed with the "unreasonable effectiveness of mathematics in the natural sciences." Large Lie groups, like E8-which is discussed in the entry "The Quest for Lie Group E8 (2007)"- may someday help us create a unified theory of physics. in 2007, Swedish American cosmologist Max Tegmark published both scientific and popular articles on the mathematical universe hypothesis, which states that our physical reality is a mathematical structure-in other words, our universe in not just described by mathematics-it is mathematics.Clifford A. Pickover 1960s Sayings By Clifford A. Pickover: In this book, you will encounter various interesting geometries that have been thought to hold
I grew up in the American South and came of age in the 1960s, an incredibly turbulent time. It was as if the seams of American life were being ripped apart with riots and protests.Sue Monk Kidd 1960s Sayings By Sue Monk Kidd: I grew up in the American South and came of age in the 1960s, an
Mankind was on the moon in the 1960s, Jon. That was half a century ago. Nuclear power. The transistor. The laser. All existed even back then. Do you really think the pinnacle of innovation since that time is Facebook?Daniel Suarez 1960s Sayings By Daniel Suarez: Mankind was on the moon in the 1960s, Jon. That was half a century ago.
Irving Wallace wrote a bestselling novel, The Man, in the 1960s about a black man becoming president of the United States. We thought that such a possibility was thousands of years in the future. Some people may still have some difficulty with the idea, but that's a major cultural meme shift.Wayne Dyer 1960s Sayings By Wayne Dyer: Irving Wallace wrote a bestselling novel, The Man, in the 1960s about a black man
And then the work bears a strong sense of leave-taking for me personally. It ends the work I began in the 1960s (paintings from black-and-white photographs), with a compressed summation that precludes any possible continuation. And so it is a leave-taking from thoughts and feelings of my own on a very basic level. Not that this is a deliberate act, of course; it is a quasi-automatic sequence of disintegration and reformation which I can perceive, as always, only in retrospect.Gerhard Richter 1960s Sayings By Gerhard Richter: And then the work bears a strong sense of leave-taking for me personally. It ends
At the end of the 1960s, I was part of the downtown theatrical movement in New York that was making work in alleyways, garages, gyms, churches, non-traditional spaces. The idea was to get away from the illusion of the conventional theatre. But then I thought, what's wrong with illusion?Robert Wilson 1960s Sayings By Robert Wilson: At the end of the 1960s, I was part of the downtown theatrical movement in
An idea sparked in the 1960s, a thought experiment, an amusing haiku, is now a thing of metal and glass.Janna Levin 1960s Sayings By Janna Levin: An idea sparked in the 1960s, a thought experiment, an amusing haiku, is now a
It was the uniform of a time and place, of a nearly extinct species - the belligerent middle-American redneck who had fought in Korea, come back with his faith unshaken, and then watched the 1960s unfold the way he might watch his house burn down. There had never been any Summer of Love for Arthur Schuler. He had no interest in Civil Rights, hippies or liberals - or Democrats for that matter. I heard him say once that it might have worked out very well if we had indeed brought all the planes back from Vietnam, just in time to napalm the Woodstock festival. But the man had lived. He had been an orphan of the Great Depression and seen the country and the world. He had made his way, been a barroom fighter and - he hinted - a womanizer at some distant point in the twentieth century, and had come away with an instinct for life, for the things that people do and their base and predictable motivations. WeMatthew Louis 1960s Sayings By Matthew Louis: It was the uniform of a time and place, of a nearly extinct species -
Laos is saddled with the distinction of one superlative: it is the most heavily bombed country on earth. During the nine-year secret war against the Communists, during the Vietnam War, the U. S. dropped 6,300,000 tons of bombs on Indochina, about 1/3 of which fell on Laos. It was the heaviest aerial bombardment in the history of warfare. During the 1960s and 1970s, the U.S. rained more bombs on Laos than were dropped on Nazi Germany during World War II -- three times the tonnage dropped during the Korean War -- the equivalent of a plane load of bombs every 8 minutes around the clock for 9 years.Sy Montgomery 1960s Sayings By Sy Montgomery: Laos is saddled with the distinction of one superlative: it is the most heavily bombed
Ginsberg, Burroughs, and Kerouac were all on the side of the savage. That their penny-ante gnosticism was not only perpetuated but mythologized and spread abroad as a gospel of emancipation is something for which we have the Sixties to thank -- or to blame.Roger Kimball 1960s Sayings By Roger Kimball: Ginsberg, Burroughs, and Kerouac were all on the side of the savage. That their penny-ante
So popular is alliteration that in the 1960s it actually made a grab for political power. In the 1960s a vast radical youth movement began campaigning to do things for the sole reason that they began with the same letter. Ban the bomb. Burn your bra. Power to the people. For a moment there it seemed as though alliteration would change the world. But then the spirit of idealism faded and those who had manned the barricades went off and got jobs in marketing.Mark Forsyth 1960s Sayings By Mark Forsyth: So popular is alliteration that in the 1960s it actually made a grab for political
From the early 1960s to the mid-1980s - the era of military dictatorship when South Korea was rebuilding itself from a postwar economic basket case to a humming, modern nation - military schools were the track of choice for ambitious young men.Kim Young-ha 1960s Sayings By Kim Young-ha: From the early 1960s to the mid-1980s - the era of military dictatorship when South

Silver 1960s Sayings By Julie K. Silver: disability rights and to demand full access. Ed Roberts and others at the University of
Since 1960s pop art the art world has been happy for artists to use the lowbrow to add zest and authenticity to their works. But middlebrow has resonances of the suburban bourgeousie who might see art as aspirational by association.Grayson Perry 1960s Sayings By Grayson Perry: Since 1960s pop art the art world has been happy for artists to use the
I tried to take seriously the idea that if you tortured language you might arrive at some new truth. Later it became clear to me that I was retreading ground by fighting the literary battles of the 1950s and 1960s, and that I was actually a bit bored by some of the books I professed to love.Hari Kunzru 1960s Sayings By Hari Kunzru: I tried to take seriously the idea that if you tortured language you might arrive
Our church has been legal since late 1960s. I've been involved since 1972. I was ordained in 1975.Sally Kirkland 1960s Sayings By Sally Kirkland: Our church has been legal since late 1960s. I've been involved since 1972. I was
I read the best works of some of the best satirists, and indeed best writers from the beginning of the Victorian era to about the 1960s. If you want to be a blacksmith, you go and watch the blacksmith working, and you work out what the blacksmith does.Terry Pratchett 1960s Sayings By Terry Pratchett: I read the best works of some of the best satirists, and indeed best writers
The Middle East has gone through periods of turmoil before. In the 1950s and 1960s, there were revolutions. When monarchies were collapsing in a number of countries, we had radicals and we had Nasserism. Today it's a little bit more complicated.Adel Al-Jubeir 1960s Sayings By Adel Al-Jubeir: The Middle East has gone through periods of turmoil before. In the 1950s and 1960s,
The 1950s and 1960s had been a period of enormous growth, the highest in American history, maybe in economic history.Noam Chomsky 1960s Sayings By Noam Chomsky: The 1950s and 1960s had been a period of enormous growth, the highest in American
In the late 1960s, I ended up in Telluride, Colorado. It wasn't like the country club that it is now. It was very raw. Skiing was there, but snowboarders have now entirely overrun it.Lance Henriksen 1960s Sayings By Lance Henriksen: In the late 1960s, I ended up in Telluride, Colorado. It wasn't like the country
Some of us stay married because we're in competition with our divorcing 1960s and 1970s parents, who made such a hash of it. What looks appealing to us now, in an increasingly frenetic, digital world, is the 1950s marriage.Sandra Tsing Loh 1960s Sayings By Sandra Tsing Loh: Some of us stay married because we're in competition with our divorcing 1960s and 1970s
And eventually, he (Charles Manson) testified to an empty court, as Bugliosi had convinced the presiding judge Older, that Manson's hypnotic powers might convince the jury he was innocent.Nikolas Schreck 1960s Sayings By Nikolas Schreck: And eventually, he (Charles Manson) testified to an empty court, as Bugliosi had convinced the
The House adjourned without voting on the bill, but the following year a similar bill - mandating equality in hotels and restaurants open to the public, in transportation facilities, in theaters and other public amusements and in the selection of juries - passed both chambers. The measure reached the White House about the time the two sides in Louisiana cobbled a compromise that allowed Grant to withdraw Sheridan and most of the federal troops. On March 1, 1875, the president signed the Civil Rights Act, the most ambitious affirmation of racial equality in American history until then (a distinction it would retain until the 1960s).H.W. Brands 1960s Sayings By H.W. Brands: The House adjourned without voting on the bill, but the following year a similar bill
But I'd say my best boss was Tom Barr, who was a partner at Cravath, Swain & Moore in the 1960s. It's because I learned so much from him.David Boies 1960s Sayings By David Boies: But I'd say my best boss was Tom Barr, who was a partner at Cravath,
In the late 1960s, red and the low green LEDs and the infrared semiconductor lasers had already been developed, but there was no prospect of practical blue light emitters, even in the '70s.Isamu Akasaki 1960s Sayings By Isamu Akasaki: In the late 1960s, red and the low green LEDs and the infrared semiconductor lasers
Young feminists have been sold a bill of goods about American feminism. The enormous changes in women over the past 40 years are constantly and falsely attributed to the organized women's movement of the late 1960s and '70s.Camille Paglia 1960s Sayings By Camille Paglia: Young feminists have been sold a bill of goods about American feminism. The enormous changes
In the 1950s and 1960s, many parents were generally standoffish with their male children and acted as if they were raising a generation of would-be soldiers. I remember some of my friends' parents who would shake their children's hands at bedtime.Ezekiel Emanuel 1960s Sayings By Ezekiel Emanuel: In the 1950s and 1960s, many parents were generally standoffish with their male children and
In the late 1960s, the New Classical economists saw the same weaknesses in the microfoundations of macroeconomics that have motivated me. They hated its lack of rigor. And they sacked it.George Akerlof 1960s Sayings By George Akerlof: In the late 1960s, the New Classical economists saw the same weaknesses in the microfoundations
I first came to think about media and politics in the late 1960s, having observed some distortions up close, but since then I wouldn't say that my personal experience has remained an important motive for my writing about media.Todd Gitlin 1960s Sayings By Todd Gitlin: I first came to think about media and politics in the late 1960s, having observed
I'm a guitar player, really - I mean, first and foremost - I grew up with all that great 1960s music, in terms of growing up, becoming a musician, so it's like first-love stuff; I'm always going to go back to it.Todd Rundgren 1960s Sayings By Todd Rundgren: I'm a guitar player, really - I mean, first and foremost - I grew up
I did a production of Macbeth in the 1960s in which I had a swordfight in the final scene. But the blade fell off my sword just as I was stabbing the guy. I ended up having to hammer him to death.Alan Dale 1960s Sayings By Alan Dale: I did a production of Macbeth in the 1960s in which I had a swordfight
I was lucky to live in New York when it was dangerous and edgy and cheap enough to play host to young, penniless artists. That was the era of "coffee shops" as they were defined in New York - cheap restaurants open round the clock where you could eat for less than it would cost to cook at home. That was the era of ripped jeans and dirty T-shirts, when the kind of people who are impressed by material signs of success were not the people you wanted to know.Edmund White 1960s Sayings By Edmund White: I was lucky to live in New York when it was dangerous and edgy and
New York was the last place that my movies caught on. I didn't make underground movies in New York, and in the 1960s, they were very snobby about that, because the whole scene was here.John Waters 1960s Sayings By John Waters: New York was the last place that my movies caught on. I didn't make underground
In some eras, self-control defines the paragon of a decent person: a grown-up, a person of dignity, a lady or a gentleman, a mensch. In others it is jeered at as uptight, prudish, stuffy, straitlaced, puritanical. Certainly the crime-prone 1960s were the recent era that most glorified the relaxation of self-control: Do your own thing, Let it all hang out, If it feels good do it, Take a walk on the wild side.Steven Pinker 1960s Sayings By Steven Pinker: In some eras, self-control defines the paragon of a decent person: a grown-up, a person
Rep. John Lewis, Georgia Democrat and a civil rights leader during the 1960s, was one of those calling on the president for a more robust federal response, such as President Dwight D. Eisenhower did against Jim Crow-defending Southern governors.Anonymous 1960s Sayings By Anonymous: Rep. John Lewis, Georgia Democrat and a civil rights leader during the 1960s, was one
I'm quite good at water skiing. Dave Clark, from the 1960s band Dave Clark Five, taught me how to water ski in Spain one year. I can do jumps too. I used to go to a club in Heathrow, but I don't do it any more, as it's given me a bad back. I was brought up in Poole, Dorset, so I've always loved watersports.Tony Blackburn 1960s Sayings By Tony Blackburn: I'm quite good at water skiing. Dave Clark, from the 1960s band Dave Clark Five,
One thing bothered me as a student. In the 1960s, human behavior was totally off limits for the biologist. There was animal behavior, then there was a long time nothing, after which came human behavior as a totally separate category best left to a different group of scientists.Frans De Waal 1960s Sayings By Frans De Waal: One thing bothered me as a student. In the 1960s, human behavior was totally off
Nevertheless, in some ways I had lost touch with many of the currents of French culture and theoretical discussion after the 1960s, and, although any admirer of Queneau and Perec cannot but be sympathetic to the French intellectual tradition of playing games with language, as French thinkers increasingly moved into the territory of 'postmodernism' I found them uninteresting, incomprehensible, and in any case of not much use to historians. Even their puns failed to grip.Eric Hobsbawm 1960s Sayings By Eric Hobsbawm: Nevertheless, in some ways I had lost touch with many of the currents of French
During the Great Depression, levels of crime actually dropped. During the 1920s, when life was free and easy, so was crime. During the 1930s, when the entire American economy fell into a government-owned alligator moat, crime was nearly non-existent. During the 1950s and 1960s, when the economy was excellent, crime rose again.Ben Shapiro 1960s Sayings By Ben Shapiro: During the Great Depression, levels of crime actually dropped. During the 1920s, when life was
In the late 1960s, the masses were supposed to be passive, not entering into the public arena and having their voices heard.Noam Chomsky 1960s Sayings By Noam Chomsky: In the late 1960s, the masses were supposed to be passive, not entering into the
It seems like the record industry made so much crazy money in the 1960s that everyone wanted to get in on it. Now it's just become very corporate. So all of these people who despise music end up being in charge.Win Butler 1960s Sayings By Win Butler: It seems like the record industry made so much crazy money in the 1960s that
I developed an interest in major league baseball and the 1960s were, as far as I'm concerned (with a nod to the Babe Ruth era of the 1920s), the Golden Age of Baseball. Like most people in the valley, I was a diehard Yankees fan and, in a pinch, a Mets fan. They were New York teams, and most New Englanders rooted for the Boston Red Sox, but our end of Connecticut was geographically and culturally closer to New York than Boston, and that's where our loyalties went.
And what was not to love? The Yankees ruled the earth in those days. The great Roger Maris set one Major League record after another and even he was almost always one hit shy of Mickey Mantle, God on High of the Green Diamond.
John William Tuohy 1960s Sayings By John William Tuohy: I developed an interest in major league baseball and the 1960s were, as far as
Over the course of six decades, some six million black southerners left the land of their forefathers and fanned out across the country for an uncertain existence in nearly every other corner of America. The Great Migration would become a turning point in history. It would transform urban America and recast the social and political order of every city it touched. It would force the South to search its soul and finally to lay aside a feudal caste system. It grew out of the unmet promises made after the Civil War and, through the sheer weight of it, helped push the country toward the civil rights revolutions of the 1960s.Isabel Wilkerson 1960s Sayings By Isabel Wilkerson: Over the course of six decades, some six million black southerners left the land of

I remember what it was like to grow up in the South in the 1960s and 1970s. Discrimination isn't something that's easy to oppose. It doesn't always stare you in the face. It moves in the shadows. And sometimes it shrouds itself within the very laws meant to protect us.Tim Cook 1960s Sayings By Tim Cook: I remember what it was like to grow up in the South in the 1960s
Radical feminism, male lesbians, transsexuals, musical condoms with suspenders, and lotsa drummers drumming are all manifestations of a political agenda with roots in the 1960s. This is all fruit we are reaping from the sexual revolution.Rush Limbaugh 1960s Sayings By Rush Limbaugh: Radical feminism, male lesbians, transsexuals, musical condoms with suspenders, and lotsa drummers drumming are all
We know at lot more now than the 'last time around the 1960s and 1970s - about how to work for smart schools ... ' 'The smart school finds it's foundation in a rich and evolving set of principles about human thinking and learning.'David Perkins 1960s Sayings By David Perkins: We know at lot more now than the 'last time around the 1960s and 1970s
In the 1960s, there was a point, 1968, '69, when there was a very strong antiwar movement against the war in Vietnam. But it's worth remembering that the war in Vietnam started - an outright war started in 1962.Noam Chomsky 1960s Sayings By Noam Chomsky: In the 1960s, there was a point, 1968, '69, when there was a very strong
Discussion of how California has 'changed,' then, tends locally to define the more ideal California as that which existed at whatever past point the speaker first saw it: Gilroy as it was in the 1960s and Gilroy as it was fifteen years ago and Gilroy as it was when my father and I ate short ribs at the Milias Hotel are three pictures with virtually no overlap, a hologram that dematerializes as I drive through it.Joan Didion 1960s Sayings By Joan Didion: Discussion of how California has 'changed,' then, tends locally to define the more ideal California
The romance that has surrounded the Beat generation since the mid-Sixties has acted as a kind of sentimental glaze, obscuring its fundamentally nihilistic impulse under a heap of bogus rhetoric about liberation, spontaneity, and 'startling oases of creativity', Notwithstanding their recent media media make-over, the Beats were not Promethean iconoclasts. They were drug-abusing sexual predators and infantilized narcissists whose shamelessness helped dupe a confused and gullible public into believing that their utterances were works of genius. We have to thank Lisa Phillips and the Whitney for inadvertently reminding us of this with such vividness. If nothing else, 'Beat Culture and the New America' showed that the Beats were not simply artistic charlatans; the were -- and, in the case of those who are still with us, they remain -- moral simpletons, whose destructive influence helped fuel the cultural catastrophe with which we are now living.Roger Kimball 1960s Sayings By Roger Kimball: The romance that has surrounded the Beat generation since the mid-Sixties has acted as a
There was a way that I approached that with the art department and the background players, which was that I didn't want people to have stepped out of a catalogue. This is not a world of perfect beauty. I wanted it to be the real world of the 1960s. I know that some women walked out of the house without lipstick.Bridget Carpenter 1960s Sayings By Bridget Carpenter: There was a way that I approached that with the art department and the background
I always try to act like I'm some old school artist from the 1960s.Danny Brown 1960s Sayings By Danny Brown: I always try to act like I'm some old school artist from the 1960s.
According to old frineds who grew up with Stanley Ann Dunham, she became a serious student of Communist and Marxist theories back in high school. One profile even named a few of her radical teachers and administrators at Mercer High, which Dunham attended, whose classrooms formed part of what was called "anarchy alley." What sounds strange is that this avante-garde, supposedly idealistic communist-thinking student of the left met a major oil company executive during the radical 1960s, and not only found him not to be a repulsively evil money-grubbing capitalist pig, but was so taken in by his Big Oil company/military charm that she married him.
Okay, so maybe that's not coincidence. Maybe that's just the power of love.
Mondo Frazier 1960s Sayings By Mondo Frazier: According to old frineds who grew up with Stanley Ann Dunham, she became a serious
There were others of course - The Velvet Undergound, the Doors- who took risks in the 1960s, when no one knew where any of it was going. Before them were the Beats and before the Beats the avant-garde artists, the futurists, Fluxus, and before that, the blues, outsider music, a mourning for what's expected but will never happen, so why not dance and play and forget for a few moments that we're all alone anyway?Kim Gordon 1960s Sayings By Kim Gordon: There were others of course - The Velvet Undergound, the Doors- who took risks in
People who have already been out in the real world, practicing for years whatever their particular specialty might be, have some basis for determining which things are relevant enough to go into a curriculum to teach those who follow. The idea that students can determine relevance in advance is one of the many counterproductive notions to come out of the 1960s.Thomas Sowell 1960s Sayings By Thomas Sowell: People who have already been out in the real world, practicing for years whatever their
Story of Pakistan' development makes an interesting reading-how a country with lot of baggage of underdevelopment and sets of contradictions and constraints, keeps on stumbling from phase to phase, adopting with religious fervour the mainstream globally accepted development ideas, policies and strategies, which are current at that time. From exclusive emphasis on growth and trickle down of 1960s, she took a U-turn and tried to redistribute the fruits of growth in 1970s.Failing miserably in this endeavour which resulted in an expanded state capitalism; she started denationalizing everything in the following decades and adopted the new mantra of liberalization. She is now struggling to remove poverty in the midst of glaring extravagance of certain classes to avoid bursting at the seams of society.Shahid Hussain Raja 1960s Sayings By Shahid Hussain Raja: Story of Pakistan' development makes an interesting reading-how a country with lot of baggage of

If it was scandalous for girls in the 1960s to wear pants to school, what else will we look back on & shake our heads at? What else can't we see in the future? And at that, what else can we dream up?Lisa Factora-Borchers 1960s Sayings By Lisa Factora-Borchers: If it was scandalous for girls in the 1960s to wear pants to school, what
An elementary school student asked me the NOT "politically correct" question, "Is an idiot smarter than a moron?" I had to Google it because I was afraid to respond in today's PC society and didn't want to offend him, his parents, or anyone else. Here's what I found.

Technically, a moron is smarter than an idiot. An imbecile is also smarter than an idiot.

Although today the words are considered insulting and derogatory, prior to the 1960s they were widely used as actual psychology terms associated with intelligence on an IQ test.

An IQ between:
00-25 = Idiot
26-50 = Imbecile
51-70 = Moron

Explaining all of this to a nine year old with an IQ of 130 made me feel like society has turned all adults into one of the above, myself included.

When I told him that I'm afraid to openly say it, the nine year old said, "Adults are idiots!
