I do portraits. I usually do live models in a class environment, but I've been painting at home more. I really love the human form, and I love faces. I've tried to do landscapes a few times.Michelle Pfeiffer Portraits Sayings By Michelle Pfeiffer: I do portraits. I usually do live models in a class environment, but I've been
There is nothing that special to see when looking at me. I'm a painter who paints day in day out, from morning till evening - figure pictures and landscapes, more rarely portraits.Gustav Klimt Portraits Sayings By Gustav Klimt: There is nothing that special to see when looking at me. I'm a painter who
On the subject of "personal beauty," for example, Lincoln merrily confided he felt fortunate that "'the women couldn't vote,' otherwise the monstrous portraits of him which had been circulated during the canvas by friends as well as by foes would surely defeat him.Harold Holzer Portraits Sayings By Harold Holzer: On the subject of "personal beauty," for example, Lincoln merrily confided he felt fortunate that
But I do not want to paint our circumstantial portraits so that we both emerge with enough well-rounded, spuriously detailed actuality that you are forced to believe in us. I do not want to practise such sleight of hand. You must be content only with glimpses of our outlines, as if you had caught sight of our reflections in the looking-glass of somebody else's house as you passed by the window.Angela Carter Portraits Sayings By Angela Carter: But I do not want to paint our circumstantial portraits so that we both emerge
I think his portraits of Jackie, Liz, Marilyn, Mao, Elvis, Lenin - and objects like the soup cans, the dollar signs, the hammer and sickle, it's all about icons. Its all about what people worship in an irreligious or secular world. In terms of Andy's personality and Andy Warhol as a human being who I was very close to, I still feel kind of sorry for him on a personal level. I mean, he was the ultimate example of great success wrapped around inner turmoil and emotional pain.Bob Colacello Portraits Sayings By Bob Colacello: I think his portraits of Jackie, Liz, Marilyn, Mao, Elvis, Lenin - and objects like
Contented, unambitious people are all very well in their way. They form a neat, useful background for great portraits to be painted against, and they make a respectable, if not particularly intelligent, audience for the active spirits of the age to play before.Jerome K. Jerome Portraits Sayings By Jerome K. Jerome: Contented, unambitious people are all very well in their way. They form a neat, useful
I do not care to paint portraits indoors. I cannot feel sympathetic.Joaquin Sorolla Portraits Sayings By Joaquin Sorolla: I do not care to paint portraits indoors. I cannot feel sympathetic.
A huge cloud of dust is not a beautiful thing to look at. Very few painters have done portraits of huge clouds of dust or included them in their landscapes or still lifes. Film directors rarely choose huge clouds of dust to play the lead roles in romantic comedies, and as far as my research has shown, a huge cloud of dust has never placed higher than twenty-fifth in a beauty pageant. Nevertheless, as the Baudelaire orphans stumbled around the cell, dropped each half of the battering ram and listening to the sound of crows flying in circles outside, they stared at the huge cloud of dust as if it were a thing of great beauty.Lemony Snicket Portraits Sayings By Lemony Snicket: A huge cloud of dust is not a beautiful thing to look at. Very few
It is easy to make a picture of someone and call it a portrait. The difficulty lies in making a picture that makes the viewer care about a stranger.Paul Strand Portraits Sayings By Paul Strand: It is easy to make a picture of someone and call it a portrait. The
Our men have been real Frenchmen, and their wives

have been worthy of them. You may see all their portraits at our house in Auvergne; every one of them an "injured" beauty, but not one of them hanging her head. Not one of them had the bad taste to be jealous ... These are great traditions, and it doesn't seem to me fair that a little American bourgeoise should come in and pretend to alter them, and should hang her photograph, with her obstinate little "air penche
Henry James Portraits Sayings By Henry James: Our men have been real Frenchmen, and their wivesI may say ithave been worthy of
Great works of art in all cultures succeed in capturing within the constraints of their form both the pathos of anguish and a vision of its resolution. Take, for example, the languorous sentences of Proust or the haiku of Basho, the late quartets and sonatas of Beethoven, the tragicomic brushwork of Sengai or the daunting canvases of Rothko, the luminous self-portraits of Rembrandt and Hakuin. Such works achieve their resolution not through consoling or romantic images whereby anguish is transcended. They accept anguish without being overwhelmed by it. They reveal anguish as that which gives beauty its dignity and depth.Stephen Batchelor Portraits Sayings By Stephen Batchelor: Great works of art in all cultures succeed in capturing within the constraints of their
I was shooting lots of large format portraits then but I've since changed to digital, where you have so much more control. Up the stairs I found an imposing headquarters, decorated with the portraits and busts of solemn, whiskered old darlings who, no doubt, bled their customers with leeches and passed on the information to alarmed small boys that self-abuse leads to blindness.John Mortimer Portraits Sayings By John Mortimer: Up the stairs I found an imposing headquarters, decorated with the portraits and busts of

We came to the house, and it is an old house, full of great chimneys where wood is burnt on ancient dogs upon the hearth, and grim portraits (some of them with grim legends, too) lower distrustfully from the oaken panels of the walls.Charles Dickens Portraits Sayings By Charles Dickens: We came to the house, and it is an old house, full of great chimneys

There is a myth that the portrait photographer is supposed to make the subject relax, and that's the real person. But I'm interested in whatever is going on. And I'm not that comfortable myself.Annie Leibovitz Portraits Sayings By Annie Leibovitz: There is a myth that the portrait photographer is supposed to make the subject relax,
Why do these big old country houses always have family portraits in the dining room? Do you really want to eat with someone's gloomy great-grandfather looking down on you?Elizabeth Jane Howard Portraits Sayings By Elizabeth Jane Howard: Why do these big old country houses always have family portraits in the dining room?
I was distracted suddenly from these pleasant thoughts by noticing that, like the eyes in certain portraits, Heather's nipples seemed to have the uncanny ability to follow you around the room. This is the kind of observation that once made, cannot be unmade. Unfortunately.Kate Atkinson Portraits Sayings By Kate Atkinson: I was distracted suddenly from these pleasant thoughts by noticing that, like the eyes in
Many intelligent people, when about to write ... , force on their minds a certain notion about style, just as they screw up their faces when they sit for their portraits.Georg C. When one starts from a portrait and seeks by successive eliminations to find pure form ... one inevitably ends up with an egg.Pablo Picasso Portraits Sayings By Pablo Picasso: When one starts from a portrait and seeks by successive eliminations to find pure form
Nietzsche may have been accurately describing the feeble pietism that surrounded him, the saccharine portraits of Jesus from childhood, but he could not have been more incorrect in his analysis that as a religion of the "sick soul," the preaching of Christ was simply a message of resignation to the powers and principalities. On the contrary, it was the most radical renunciation of the herd mentality that keeps us addicted to the power brokers of this age.Michael S. Horton Portraits Sayings By Michael S. Horton: Nietzsche may have been accurately describing the feeble pietism that surrounded him, the saccharine portraits

It's almost embarrassing, but I do have one trick for taking portraits on commission. I carry one of these little bicycle horns in my pocket, and once in a while, when someone is sour-faced or stiff, I blow my horn. It sort of shatters the barriers. It's silly, but it works.Elliott Erwitt Portraits Sayings By Elliott Erwitt: It's almost embarrassing, but I do have one trick for taking portraits on commission. I

And I was very successful at baby photography ... Strange isn't it? Because some of my portraits of babies were - I used dramatic lighting, shadow lighting, and I didn't use flash. We didn't have flash in those days, we just had floodlights, and I was photographing babies as I would an object - an inanimate object, for that matter.Julius Shulman Portraits Sayings By Julius Shulman: And I was very successful at baby photography ... Strange isn't it? Because some of
Winckelmann wished to live with a work of art as a friend. The saying is true of pen and pencil. Fresh lustre shoots from Lycidas in a twentieth perusal. Kenneth Hari does not paint portraits as they are but as he is. I feel he is hiding something from me. Within, there were several ponderous brazen-bound volumes of medieval date, a thin manuscript of yellowing parchment, and two portraits whose faces had been turned to the wall, as if it were unlawful for even the darkness of the sealed closet to behold them.Clark Ashton Smith Portraits Sayings By Clark Ashton Smith: Within, there were several ponderous brazen-bound volumes of medieval date, a thin manuscript of yellowing
I collect old portraits. They're all just interesting pictures of people, and you just kind of wonder who they were and what they were. There's a guy - I don't know who he is, but he's wearing a suit. He's got his arms folded, and he looks like he sold insurance or something. I'm just wondering why someone painted him.Ellen DeGeneres Portraits Sayings By Ellen DeGeneres: I collect old portraits. They're all just interesting pictures of people, and you just kind

Memes can be visual. Our image of George Washington is a meme. We don't actually have any idea what George Washington looked like. There are so many different portraits of him, and they're all different. But we have an image in our head, and that image is propagated from one place to another, from one person to another.James Gleick Portraits Sayings By James Gleick: Memes can be visual. Our image of George Washington is a meme. We don't actually

My mom had a Canon AE1 camera and I read the manual and that's basically how I became a photographer. I was in the Baltimore punk scene. I knew it was a special time, so I went out and documented that whole era. I was the only person to really do it of my friends in real black and white, beautiful portraits.Jeff Vespa Portraits Sayings By Jeff Vespa: My mom had a Canon AE1 camera and I read the manual and that's basically
In assembling this group of portraits of women, I'm aware that I'm treading on dangerous ground. When I was in college, I learned to be distrustful of men's depictions of women. I remember seeing Garry Winogrand's book Women Are Beautiful in the school library and being shocked that it hadn't been defaced for its blatant objectification of women. But looking back, maybe I was too harsh. Whether one photographs men or women, it is always a form of objectification. Whatever you say about Winogrand, his depiction was honest.Alec Soth Portraits Sayings By Alec Soth: In assembling this group of portraits of women, I'm aware that I'm treading on dangerous
The canvases which Mr. St. Jones referred to with a paintbrush that was long and slightly bowed: for the most part interiors, or undergrounds, of pocked and craggy holes, rock vaults with mossy floors and slimy walls, or narrow scenic vistas that skinny silver streams squirmed through like sidewinders flipped on their backs, beneath downward grasping tentacles of roots, stalactites dagger-sharp and dangling by threads of stone, stalagmites teetering, all doused, frozen in molten electric white that suggested what a glimpse of hell might be, too beautiful, some still lifes too, great bulbous beets, hoary legumes, giant scallions, white carrots, tomatoes, berries, squash in huge radiant bowls, and portraits, signed by Ionia, of shadows, from which gleamed eyes and teeth and nails and, here and there, a glowing bubble, or scrotum, caught the eye. Near the door a counter clacked but rather quietly.Douglas Woolf Portraits Sayings By Douglas Woolf: The canvases which Mr. St. Jones referred to with a paintbrush that was long and
In Isaac Newton's lifetime, no more than a few thousand people had any idea what he looked like, though he was one of England's most famous men, yet now millions of people have quite a clear idea - based on replicas of copies of rather poorly painted portraits. Even more pervasive and indelible are the smile of Mona Lisa, The Scream of Edvard Munch, and the silhouettes of various fictional extraterrestrials. These are memes, living a life of their own, independent of any physical reality. "This may not be what George Washington looked like then," a tour guide was overheard saying of the Gilbert Stuart painting at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, "but this is what he looks like now." Exactly.James Gleick Portraits Sayings By James Gleick: In Isaac Newton's lifetime, no more than a few thousand people had any idea what
I always take a close look at those who lose themselves in self portraits. They are solitary souls, prone to introspection, who have really grappled with their existence.Young-Ha Kim Portraits Sayings By Young-Ha Kim: I always take a close look at those who lose themselves in self portraits. They

and when Mrs Thatcher came to the college for a scientific symposium Tyson was deputed to take her round the Common Room. This is hung with portraits and photographs of dead fellows, including one of the economist G. D. H. Cole. Tyson planned to take Mrs Thatcher up to it saying, 'And this, Prime Minister, is a former fellow, G. D. H. Dole.' Whereupon, with luck, Mrs Thatcher would have had to say, 'Cole not Dole.' In the event he did take her round but lost his nerve.Alan Bennett Portraits Sayings By Alan Bennett: and when Mrs Thatcher came to the college for a scientific symposium Tyson was deputed
Your aim as a photographer is to get a picture of that person that means something. Portraits aren't fantasies; they need to tell a truth.Tim Walker Portraits Sayings By Tim Walker: Your aim as a photographer is to get a picture of that person that means
If we accord importance to the kind of portraits which surround us, it is because we fashion our lives according to their example, accepting aspects of ourselves if they concur with what others mention of themselves.Alain De Botton Portraits Sayings By Alain De Botton: If we accord importance to the kind of portraits which surround us, it is because
A family portrait is only complete with love to fill it's frame.Wes Fesler Portraits Sayings By Wes Fesler: A family portrait is only complete with love to fill it's frame.
If I was in love with someone, I would get their picture out of the school yearbook and do portraits. If I was curious about sex, I would draw pictures of it. There were no books for me to look at. Then I would go find my father's matches to burn the paper.Lynn Johnston Portraits Sayings By Lynn Johnston: If I was in love with someone, I would get their picture out of the
When you pose for a photograph, it's behind a smile that isn't yours. You are angry and hungry and alive. What I value in you is that intensity. I want to make portraits as intense as people.Richard Avedon Portraits Sayings By Richard Avedon: When you pose for a photograph, it's behind a smile that isn't yours. You are
But are no other portraits necessary? Should we not be taught to see the men and women among whom we really live, - men and women such as we are ourselves, - in order that we should know what are the exact failings which oppress ourselves, and thus learn to hate, and if possible to avoid in life the faults of character which in life are hardly visible, but which in portraiture of life can be made to be so transparent.Anthony Trollope Portraits Sayings By Anthony Trollope: But are no other portraits necessary? Should we not be taught to see the men
Karl stood up and pointed at the large portraits on the wall. He swept the room from George Washington to Ben Franklin to John Adams to Thomas Jefferson. "Soldier, Printer, Lawyer, Scholar. That winter you left me snow-blind trying to find enough details that would let you know that even though some people have perfect sight,
those same people could try to paint you by numbers and they still wouldn't get you right.
You were Monet number two and Van Gogh number 6,
a mix tape of Hendrix and Leibowitz portraits.

It makes no sense to me that we were ever together.
And my makeshift weather reports were the closest I ever came to telling you how I felt.
But you were a lover of the minuscule,
you dealt best with details.
Weighing our relationship on scales you balanced us out, and always made me feel needed.

You always asked me what to wear,
and I would stare at you as if for a second I wouldn't answer.
Of course, I always did.
Hid my affections, and my response:
"wear that smile" I said.
That one you wear when you see me.
That one you wear to bed.
Shane L. Koyczan Portraits Sayings By Shane L. Koyczan: (...)That winter you left me snow-blind trying to find enough details that would let you
Fashion is where I make my living. I'm not knocking it; it's a pleasure to make a living that way. Then there's the deeper pleasure of doing my portraits.Richard Avedon Portraits Sayings By Richard Avedon: Fashion is where I make my living. I'm not knocking it; it's a pleasure to

Alexandra, my eldest, here, plays the piano, or reads or sews; Adelaida paints landscapes and portraits (but never finishes any); and Aglaya sits and does nothing. I don't work too much, either.Fyodor Dostoyevsky Portraits Sayings By Fyodor Dostoyevsky: Alexandra, my eldest, here, plays the piano, or reads or sews; Adelaida paints landscapes and
There are certain things - How to say this? OK. Let me give you an example. Can I give you an example? There's a self-portrait by Rembrandt. It's at Kenwood House, very close to where we live. It's one of my favorite paintings. I go to see it quite a lot. I start off on a walk on the Heath, and then I find myself there. It's one of the last self-portraits he did. He painted it sometime between 1665 and when he died four years later, bankrupt and alone. Whole stretches of the canvas are bare. There's a hurried intensity in the strokes - you can see where he scratched into the wet paint with the end of the brush. It's as if he knew there wasn't much time left. And yet, there's a serenity in his face, a sense of something that's survived its own ruin.
Fran couldn't give two shits about that painting.
Nicole Krauss Portraits Sayings By Nicole Krauss: There are certain things - How to say this? OK. Let me give you an
I loathe my own face, and I've done self-portraits because I've had nobody else to do.Francis Bacon Portraits Sayings By Francis Bacon: I loathe my own face, and I've done self-portraits because I've had nobody else to
In the beginning, I started doing portraits of children, and of course, children have large eyes. For some reason, they just started getting bigger and bigger. Then, when I started painting imaginary children rather than real ones, they became bigger still.Margaret Keane Portraits Sayings By Margaret Keane: In the beginning, I started doing portraits of children, and of course, children have large
You painted all those characters into the paintings all over the school, and every one of them is a portrait of you, but in disguise. That's how you've been watching us. You spread yourself out through all those paintings. And since you are the original artist, nobody else can ever destroy the portraits. It was your way of assuring you could always keep an eye on things, even after death.G. Norman Lippert Portraits Sayings By G. Norman Lippert: You painted all those characters into the paintings all over the school, and every one
I'm not exactly sure how old the girls are [in Bink & Gollie], but I can pretty much guarantee that their parents will never show up. That would mess up the fun. I do, however, very much like Kate's idea of having Tony [Fucile] draw their portraits.Kate DiCamillo Portraits Sayings By Kate DiCamillo: I'm not exactly sure how old the girls are [in Bink & Gollie], but I
What a conception of art must those theorists have who exclude portraits from the proper province of the fine arts! It is exactly as if we denied that to be poetry in which the poet celebrates the woman he really loves. Portraiture is the basis and the touchstone of historic painting.August Wilhelm Von Schlegel Portraits Sayings By August Wilhelm Von Schlegel: What a conception of art must those theorists have who exclude portraits from the proper
Beauty can be seen in all things, seeing and composing the beauty is what separates the snapshot from the photograph.Matt Hardy Portraits Sayings By Matt Hardy: Beauty can be seen in all things, seeing and composing the beauty is what separates
When we write memoir we are re-creating, sorting through the layer of remembering, to put form and shape to our experience through language. By borrowing from the techniques of fiction and poetry, we are able to make the events of our past come alive, creating detailed pictures of time and place and portraits of the people who have come and gone in our lives. We use scene and dialogue, challenging ourselves to recall how someone talked, what they said (or more accurately, what we remember that they said) and how we felt when moving among the people and events of our past.Janice Gray Portraits Sayings By Janice Gray: When we write memoir we are re-creating, sorting through the layer of remembering, to put
Resistance here doesn't mean revolution. It doesn't mean storming the barricades. Resistance means using art for the things that it does best, which is to create human portraits and communicate ideas and forge a climate where people of different races or classes are known to you because they make themselves known. In the simplest terms, art humanizes. It opens the circuit of empathy. And once that process happens, it's that much harder to think of people as part of a policy or a statistic. Art reverses the alienation that can creep into society.Questlove Portraits Sayings By Questlove: Resistance here doesn't mean revolution. It doesn't mean storming the barricades. Resistance means using art
As though one's life were a series of galleries in which all the portraits of any one period had a marked family likeness, the same (so to speak) tonality - this early Swann abounding in leisure, fragrant with the scent of the great chestnut-tree, of baskets of raspberries and of a sprig of tarragon.Marcel Proust Portraits Sayings By Marcel Proust: As though one's life were a series of galleries in which all the portraits of
We all stood and gathered our backpacks and I looked at the floor around my chair to make sure I hadn't dropped anything. I was terrified of unwittingly leaving behind a scrap of paper on which were written all my private desires and humiliations. The fact that no such scrap of paper existed, that I did not even keep a diary or write letters except bland, earnest, falsely cheerful ones to my family (We lost to St. Francis in soccer, but I think we'll win our game this Saturday; we are working on self-portraits in art class, and the hardest part for me is the nose) never decreased my fear.Curtis Sittenfeld Portraits Sayings By Curtis Sittenfeld: We all stood and gathered our backpacks and I looked at the floor around my
The way someone who's being photographed presents himself to the camera, and the effect of the photographer's response on that presence, is what the making of a portrait is all about.Richard Avedon Portraits Sayings By Richard Avedon: The way someone who's being photographed presents himself to the camera, and the effect of
I have painted portraits that to me are almost photographic. I remember hesitating to show the paintings, they looked so real to me. But they have passed into the world as abstractions - no one seeing what they are.Georgia O'Keeffe Portraits Sayings By Georgia O'Keeffe: I have painted portraits that to me are almost photographic. I remember hesitating to show

Perhaps I have not lined his portrait too clearly. But if he exists, if only for the reason that I have imagined him to be. He came from the blue and returns to the blue. He has not perished, he is not lost. Neither will he be forgotten.Henry Miller Portraits Sayings By Henry Miller: Perhaps I have not lined his portrait too clearly. But if he exists, if only
The humor for me is how far above your head the signature is - it's dislocated from the sign of the artist in such a distinct way that it could almost be a self-portrait of a sort.Laura Owens Portraits Sayings By Laura Owens: The humor for me is how far above your head the signature is - it's
A portrait photographer depends upon another person to complete his picture. The subject imagined, which in a sense is me, must be discovered in someone else willing to take part in a fiction he cannot possibly know about.Richard Avedon Portraits Sayings By Richard Avedon: A portrait photographer depends upon another person to complete his picture. The subject imagined, which
I never wanted to make portraits - to photograph celebrities, beautiful people, beautiful landscapes, beautiful buildings, or people in distressing situations ... I have always been interested in everyman - average, ordinary people in everyday situations.Ray Metzker Portraits Sayings By Ray Metzker: I never wanted to make portraits - to photograph celebrities, beautiful people, beautiful landscapes, beautiful
Andre Breton once said that a portrait should not only be an image but an oracle one questions, and that the photographer's aim should be a profound likeness, which physically and morally predicts the subject's entire future.Bill Brandt Portraits Sayings By Bill Brandt: Andre Breton once said that a portrait should not only be an image but an
For a moment his rage was so great that he literally could not speak. The blood beat loudly in his ears. It was like getting a call from some twentieth-century Medici prince ... no portraits of my family with their warts showing, please, or back to the rabble you'll go. I subsidize no pictures but pretty pictures.Stephen King Portraits Sayings By Stephen King: For a moment his rage was so great that he literally could not speak. The
Even if I had convict ancestry, I wouldn't be ashamed of it. As far as I'm concerned, the real criminals back in those days weren't twelve-year-old boys nicking a loaf of bread or a pair of socks to ward off hunger and blisters. No, it was those who exploited them; keeping the battler in the gutter while they sat around in their manors, sipping tea and admiring portraits of their toffee-nosed great grandfathers.Cameron Trost Portraits Sayings By Cameron Trost: Even if I had convict ancestry, I wouldn't be ashamed of it. As far as

Later, in a different home, I befriended a eucalypt, using a resilient bough as a trampoline.
